The myths surrounding process capability and maturity appraisals seem to always
be more pervasive than truth. Among the many myths surrounding appraisals, the
big ones are:
-
Myth: An organization can get "certified" at a CMM or CMMI maturity level.
-
Myth: The primary purpose for appraisals is to achieve a maturity level.
-
Myth: An appraisal must be performed by an "outside" organization to be
    "official")
-
Myth: Having an appraisal that results in a maturity level proves that the
organization can deliver high-quality software and systems on
    schedule and within budget.
There is no empirical evidence supporting any of these and other myths. The
primary root cause of these myths is that no independent body - not the SEI, not
anyone - verifies that appraisals are performed in accordance with the
requirements and methodologies that define them [e.g., CMM Appraisal Framework
(CAF), Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC), SCAMPI Method Description].
