There is a pervasive belief in the process improvement industry that if an
organization has not been appraised (assessed) at a CMM or CMMI maturity level 2
or higher, then the organization is operating in complete chaos and has slim
chance for surviving, much less competing. Process consultants want you to
believe this myth so they can sell you maturity levels and take your money. The
idea that level 1 organizations are "bottom-feeding, mud-sucking"
entities is not
only complete nonsense, it’s demeaning and insulting to successful organizations
world wide.
Just because the SEI doesn’t define KPAs (CMM) or Process Areas (CMMI) for
maturity level 1 of the models doesn’t mean there’s nothing there. Our
observations of the nature of business systems shows that almost every
organization has naturally evolved good - and sometimes even excellent
- engineering
and management practices. Unfortunately, when you only look through the lens of
the CMM or CMMI as most appraisals do, you can’t see these native practices.
Natural SPI offers process capability and maturity level appraisals for both the
CMM and CMMI that go way beyond simply finding strengths and weaknesses against
the model.
